A native of the Ruhrgebiet born in 1958, Margret Ribbert studied art history, classical archaeology and Christian archaeology in Münster, Westphalia and Bonn. While still a student from 1985 to 1989, she helped out at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn. She wrote her 1989 doctoral dissertation on the ivory sculptures of the Ältere Metzer Group at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn. After two years’ work experience at the Ulmer Museum, she spent the years 1991 to 1994 as a research assistant at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg, where was on the team that organized the show LudwigsLust – Die Sammlung Peter und Irene Ludwig. She has been a curator of Basel Historical Museum’s department of decorative art and domestic culture (incl. textiles, ceramics, household items, glassware and toys) since 1994. Since autumn 2020 member of the Management Board.
