Marc Fehlmann studied classical archaeology and art history in Basel and Zurich, completed an MA in Museum Studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art (UCL) in London and was awarded a doctorate by the University of Zurich in 1998.

He was a conservator at Kunstmuseum Bern and lecturer at the University of Zurich and Oxford University from 1999 to 2004, after which he was appointed associate professor in the Department of Archaeology and Art History at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus, where his focus was on cultural heritage in conflict zones. After a period as senior fellow at the Collegium Budapest, he took over as director of the Oskar Reinhart Museum in Winterthur from 2012 to 2015 and was head of collections at the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin from 2015 to 2017. He succeeded Marie-Paule Jungblut as director of Basel Historical Museum in 2017, and together with Sabine Söll-Tauchert is currently preparing a major new show to mark the Basel Cathedral millennium.
