Active Agents –
Stories of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Innovation

11.11.2016–18.06.2017

A variety of innovations delivered by the chemical and pharmaceutical industry shape our everyday life: hairspray for styling, contact lenses for clear vision, trainers for your workout, and Valium to deal with the stress. A world without pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, pesticides and synthetics is no longer imaginable. Through a selection of products, the exhibition demonstrates how invisible molecules have had and continue to have an impact on history.

The collection of the HMB - Historical Museum Basel displays some highlights of local and international relevance. In the medieval period Basel started to become an important and influential city. Trade and craft were flourishing after the construction of the Cathedral and the building of the bridge across the Rhine.

„Step by step“ introduces the visitors to some items like the Fountain Figures, Cathedral treasury, Dance of Death and medieval tapestries representing the unique history of Basel.
