The Historical Museum Basel welcomes visitors with disabilities. Unfortunately, as all our exhibition sites are historical buildings subject to preservation orders, wheelchair access cannot always be guaranteed. The following information will help you plan your visit. People escorting the mobility impaired who would be unable to visit the museum alone are admitted free of charge.
Barfüsser Church
The Barfüsser Church is largely barrier-free. There is wheelchair access to the permanent collection and special exhibitions and there is a lift connecting the basement, ground floor and one of the galleries. A toilet for wheelchair users is provided in the basement.
There are two clearly marked disabled parking spaces 150 m from the entrance on Barfüssergasse (accessible via Freie Strasse/Kaufhausgasse).
Access by public transport: Tram No. 8 (Combino) to Bankverein (from there on foot via Freie Strasse/Kaufhausgasse).
Mobility-impaired visitors with an escort can make use of the museum’s own wheelchair.
Folding chairs are also available.
There are no audio guides.
Haus zum Kirschgarten
Several staircases and many single steps unfortunately make the Haus zum Kirschgarten unsuitable for wheelchair users.
There are no audio guides.
Museum of Music
The Museum of Music has wheelchair access throughout. There is a lift connecting all floors. As the cells housing the exhibits are very narrow (the doorways are only 60 cm wide), however, some wheelchair users may have to switch to a smaller wheelchair. The museum has two such wheelchairs available.
A toilet for wheelchair users is provided on the third floor.
Visitors entitled to disabled parking can make use of the spaces in front of St. Leonard’s Church.
Please note that the road in front of the museum is cobbled.
To be able to drive up to the museum entrance (through the Lohnhof coach entrance), the bollards first have to be retracted. To arrange this, please call +041 (0)61 264 91 60.
There are no audio guides, but visitors can select music samples inside the exhibition cells.
Carriage Museum
The Carriage Museum has wheelchair access throughout.
Please note that the road in front of the museum is cobbled.
Please note that there are no toilets in the museum itself, although visitors are welcome to use the toilet with wheelchair access in the Berri-Scheune opposite.
Mobility-impaired visitors and their escorts who wish to be dropped off at the entrance should call the Botanical Gardens at +41 (0)61 319 97 80 to arrange this. The car dropping them off must be parked in St. Jakob’s car park.
There are no audio guides.
Guides for the blind and the visually impaired
Guided tours for the blind and the visually impaired can be arranged at all four sites. To arrange such a tour, please call +041 (0)61 205 86 00.
