In its most radical modernization project since 1981, the Historical Museum Basel is redesigning its permanent collection henceforth to be housed in the basement of the Barfüsserkirche. The presentation of the collection called «Understanding the World» will open to the public in November 2011.
The basement of the church has been comprehensively redesigned to create exhibition space for a wide range of exhibits. In addition to tapestries from Basel showing both medieval fantasy worlds and scenes of everyday life, collecting itself and the cabinet of curiosities will shed light on the Renaissance and Baroque worldview. Another section will be devoted to the region’s rich archaeological heritage, with the coin cabinet and Burgundian Booty as highlights.
The exhibition will present historical facts and storylines in a way that is stimulating, informative and interactive. Audio points and interactive media will enable visitors to approach the various exhibits from different angles and to be proactive in their own personal quest for knowledge.
Understanding the World.
