Basel’s Mysterious Sunken Treasures

21.9.2017–4.3.2018

Basel’s sunken treasures are full of secrets. Whether they are millions of years old or modern-day finds from a recent clean-up (“Ryybuzete”), they give us an unusual glimpse of the history of the city. They tell of lives along the river, of love and hate, of commerce and consumption, of faith and violence, of remembering and forgetting.

The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the world hidden beneath the surface of the water: with geological finds showing how the landscape itself has changed over time; with Roman coins and parts of wrecks confirming Basel’s role as a trading city and port at the heart of a vast empire; with medieval artefacts salvaged from Rümelin ditch and items of jewellery fished out of the sewers proving that not everything that went down the drain was rubbish; with 18th-century cannon balls that make us doubt the gunners’ targeting skills; and with stolen goods dumped in the Rhine that turn a benign river into an accomplice in crime.
